Matunga, Mumbai

Matunga is in central Mumbai, north of Dadar and south of Sion and Mahim. The railway lines split it into Matunga West, near Mahim and the Western line's Matunga Road station, and Matunga East, around King's Circle and Matunga station on the Central line. Wadala lies to the east.

Matunga East is one of the older planned parts of the city, laid out in the early twentieth century with wide roads, low buildings and gardens. King's Circle (Maheshwari Udyan) is its centre, and the area is known for its South Indian community, temples, restaurants and the flower and vegetable markets near the station. Several well-known institutions are here: Ruia College, Podar College, VJTI and the Institute of Chemical Technology. Housing is mostly old co-operative buildings, and new homes come from redevelopment. Buyers tend to be families with roots in the area and professionals who want central Mumbai with good schools and colleges close by.

Matunga has stations on both the Central and Western lines, and Dadar station on Metro Line 3 is a short ride south. Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road runs through the east, and the Eastern Freeway and Sion junction are close.

Lodha Divino (possession due December 2027, from ₹3.65 crore) and Godrej Five Garden (December 2028, from ₹7.57 crore) are under construction; Godrej Five Garden is more than two years away. Wadhwa Pristine (possession was due in June 2024, from ₹2.14 crore) and Kalpataru Matru Ashish (September 2024, from ₹9.44 crore) are shown as ready to move. Prices should be confirmed. Old building stock and limited parking are the main drawbacks.
