Greater Noida is a planned city in Gautam Buddh Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, run by the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA). The authority was created on 28 January 1991 under the UP Industrial Area Development Act of 1976, and it handles the city's planning, development and maintenance. Greater Noida is a separate city from Noida: the two share a district and a busy six-lane expressway, but Noida is governed by its own authority. The notified area is about 380 sq km and takes in over a hundred villages.
The city is laid out on a grid, with residential sectors named after Greek letters. Alpha, Beta and Gamma are the oldest, while sectors such as Xi, Delta, Mu, Omicron and Tau are newer. Utilities and cabling were planned to run underground. Education is a major part of the city's identity: the Knowledge Park sectors host colleges such as Galgotias College and GNIOT, and universities in and around the city include Sharda University, Gautam Buddha University, Shiv Nadar University and Bennett University. The India Expo Mart has hosted the Auto Expo several times.
For home buyers the market splits into three parts. The main city, with its Greek-letter sectors and Knowledge Parks, is served by the Noida Metro Aqua Line, which opened in January 2019. Greater Noida West, earlier sold as Noida Extension, is a dense belt of high-rise societies on the Noida side of the Hindon river; it is also under GNIDA but still has no metro, with an extension awaiting Union Cabinet approval as of September 2026. The third part is the Yamuna Expressway corridor beyond Pari Chowk. Although addresses there often say Greater Noida, those sectors are planned by a different body, the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA).
The biggest change to the region is Noida International Airport at Jewar, in YEIDA's area. It was inaugurated in March 2026 and began commercial flights on 15 June 2026, with the Yamuna Expressway as its main road link. Buyers should check which authority approved a project, whether it is registered with UP RERA, and how far it is from a working metro station before deciding.

Are Noida and Greater Noida the same city?
No. Both are in Gautam Buddh Nagar district, but Greater Noida is planned by GNIDA while Noida has its own authority. The Noida-Greater Noida Expressway links the two.
Is Greater Noida West part of Greater Noida?
Yes. Greater Noida West, formerly called Noida Extension, is administered by GNIDA. It covers sectors such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 12, 16B and 16C.
Is the Yamuna Expressway area under the Greater Noida authority?
No. Sectors along the Yamuna Expressway are planned by YEIDA, a separate authority formed in 2001. Addresses there may still say Greater Noida, so check the approving authority.
Does Greater Noida have a metro?
Yes. The Noida Metro Aqua Line has run since January 2019 and has six stations in Greater Noida, from Knowledge Park II to Depot. Greater Noida West is not yet connected; its extension awaited Union Cabinet approval as of September 2026.
