Virar, Mumbai

Virar is at the northern end of Mumbai's Western Railway suburban network, in Palghar district. It falls under the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation, with Nallasopara to the south and the Vaitarna river further north. The railway line divides it into Virar West, towards the Arabian Sea and Arnala, and Virar East, towards the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway (NH 48) and the hills.

Virar grew rapidly from the 1990s as one of the most affordable places to buy a home within reach of the suburban railway. Housing is mostly in mid-rise buildings and large townships, often sold as compact 1 and 2 BHK flats. The Jivdani Devi temple on a hill in Virar East and Arnala beach and fort to the west are local landmarks. Buyers are mainly first-time buyers and young families who commute to jobs in the western suburbs, as well as households working locally in Vasai-Virar.

Many Western line slow and fast trains start and end at Virar, which helps commuters get a seat, but the ride to Andheri or Dadar is long. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway runs along the east. The Virar-Alibaug multimodal corridor is planned but not yet built, and there is no metro in Virar.
