Powai lies in the eastern suburbs around Powai Lake, with Chandivali and Saki Naka to the west, Vikhroli and Kanjurmarg to the east, and the hills of Sanjay Gandhi National Park to the north. Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) and Adi Shankaracharya Marg run through it, and Saki Vihar Road leads west to Marol.

Powai grew from the 1980s around the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay campus and the Hiranandani Gardens township, a planned area with tall residential towers, offices, schools, shops and the Galleria. Today it has a large base of technology, finance and consulting offices, so many residents walk or take short rides to work. Dr L.H. Hiranandani Hospital serves the area. Housing is mostly in high-rise towers, in the Hiranandani layout and in newer complexes around it. Buyers are typically senior professionals, expatriate staff and investors who rent to people working in Powai.

Powai does not yet have an operational metro station. Metro Line 6, from Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli along JVLR, will have stations in Powai and is under construction. The nearest operational metro stops are on Line 1 at Saki Naka, and Kanjurmarg and Vikhroli stations on the Central line are to the east. JVLR links Powai with the Western and Eastern Express Highways.
