Mathikere is in north Bengaluru, north of Malleswaram and west of the Sadashivanagar and Sanjay Nagar side. The Indian Institute of Science campus is to the south, Yeshwanthpur to the west, and New BEL Road runs along its eastern edge towards the RMV Extension and Dollars Colony area. MSR Nagar and the M. S. Ramaiah institutions sit next to it.

The area is shaped by its educational and medical institutions. M. S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, its medical college and M. S. Ramaiah Memorial Hospital are here, so students, faculty and hospital staff make up a large part of the population, along with families who have lived here for decades.
