Basavanagudi, Bengaluru

Basavanagudi is one of the oldest planned neighbourhoods in Bengaluru, laid out in the late 1890s after a plague outbreak pushed the city to build new extensions. It lies south of the old city, with Lalbagh to the east, Chamarajpet to the north, Hanumanthanagar and Srinagar to the west, and Jayanagar and Banashankari to the south. It takes its name from the Bull Temple, the Dodda Basavana Gudi, on Bull Temple Road. The area is within the Greater Bengaluru Authority, under the Bengaluru West City Corporation.

Basavanagudi is known for its cultural life. Gandhi Bazaar and DVG Road are old shopping streets, the Bugle Rock park and Lalbagh give it green space, and institutions such as National College and BMS College of Engineering are here. The annual Kadalekai Parishe, the groundnut fair near the Bull Temple, draws large crowds. The Green Line has National College and Lalbagh stations on its edge, so Majestic and Jayanagar are easy to reach. Streets are narrow and parking is scarce, and the old houses are gradually being replaced by apartment buildings.

Homes are mostly older independent houses and small apartment buildings, with few large projects because land is scarce. Buyers are usually families with ties to south Bengaluru who want an established, central address. IndiProp lists one project here, Prestige Botanique, which was priced from about ₹1.62 crore.
