About Punawale, Pune
Punawale is on the north-western side of Pimpri-Chinchwad, between Tathawade and Wakad to the south and Ravet to the north, along the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway. It is close to the Pune end of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and the Hinjewadi IT park is a short drive south-west. Like its neighbours, it was farmland until the IT boom pushed housing north from Wakad, and it now mostly consists of newer apartment societies.
For years one issue hung over Punawale. PCMC's 2008 development plan reserved a 65-acre plot in the Kate Wasti forest area for a garbage depot, and residents from Punawale, Wakad, Ravet and Hinjewadi protested against it, including a bike rally and a chipko protest in November 2023. The state announced in December 2023 that the depot was cancelled, and in May 2025 PCMC formally dropped the plan and set the land aside for commercial use and a convention centre. IndiProp lists three projects in Punawale: Saarrthi Stanza and two Siddhashila projects, Eela and Eira, offering 1, 2 and 3 BHK homes at mid-market prices.
Roads are the current constraint. The Punawale and Tathawade highway underpasses struggle at peak hours, and Union minister Nitin Gadkari has ordered faster work on the service roads and wider underpasses. NHAI has also approved three new underpasses for the Punawale, Wakad, Tathawade, Ravet and Kiwale belt, and PCMC has cleared seven road projects in these areas. Looking further ahead, MahaMetro's revised Bhakti Shakti to Chakan metro plan passes through Punawale. It suits Hinjewadi employees looking for lower prices than Wakad.
