Pashan, Pune

Pashan is a western Pune suburb bordered by Baner to the north, Sus to the west, Bavdhan to the south and the Savitribai Phule Pune University campus to the east. The name means stone in Sanskrit and Marathi, and the area sits on rising ground below the Baner and Pashan hills. Pashan Road, which feeds traffic towards the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and the Baner-Pashan Link Road are the main routes.

Several national research institutions are based here. The National Chemical Laboratory, IISER Pune, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology and the Armament Research and Development Establishment are all in or beside Pashan. Pashan Lake, a British-era reservoir formed by damming the Ram Nadi, is now a bird-watching spot with a PMC nature trail, although silt and pollution have been long-running problems and the lake stopped supplying drinking water in 1998.
