Cooke Town, Bengaluru

Cooke Town is one of the old Cantonment suburbs of east-central Bengaluru, laid out around 1900 and named after G. H. Cooke, who headed the Civil and Military Station's municipal commission in the late 1920s and early 1930s. It sits between Richards Town, Pottery Town, Pulakeshi Nagar and Sarvagnanagar, with Frazer Town just to the south-west and Banaswadi to the north-east. Hutchins Road and Wheeler Road are the main streets.

The area still has the feel of the old Cantonment: tree-lined lanes, churches, a mixed Tamil, Kannada, Muslim and Christian population, and small food shops that have been around for generations. Milton Street Park, restored by residents, hosts a regular flea market. Banaswadi and Bangalore East railway stations are close, and the Central Business District around MG Road is a short drive away, although the narrow roads slow down traffic at peak hours.

Housing is a mix of surviving bungalows, independent houses and low-rise apartment blocks that have replaced many of the older homes. Land is scarce and prices are among the highest in the city outside the central core, so buyers here tend to be established families, business owners and returning NRIs who want an older, central neighbourhood rather than a new suburb.

The Pink Line's underground section from Dairy Circle to Nagawara, with stations at Tannery Road and Venkateshpura on this side of the city, is still under construction.
