Market Yard, Pune

Market Yard takes its name from the Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard, Pune's wholesale market for vegetables, fruit, flowers, grain and groceries. It sits at Gultekdi in south-central Pune, close to Swargate, with Bibwewadi to the south and Salisbury Park and Maharshi Nagar around it. The market moved here in 1980 from the old Mandai in Budhwar Peth, and the neighbourhood around it is an established mix of older housing societies and newer mid-rise buildings.

The location is central. Swargate, the old city peths and Camp are close, Satara Road runs to the west, and Gangadham Chowk links Market Yard with Bibwewadi and Kondhwa. The bigger change underway is the metro. Maha Metro is building the underground Swargate-Katraj extension of the Purple Line, with a Market Yard station; ground was broken in September 2024 and completion is targeted for 2029. Work speeded up in 2026 with traffic diversions around the Market Yard and Bibwewadi station sites.
