About Balkum, Thane
Balkum is in north-central Thane West, between Kapurbawdi and Majiwada to the south and west and Kolshet to the north. Balkum Naka, on the road that crosses the creek towards Kasheli and Bhiwandi, is its main junction, and Kolshet Road begins here. Like much of this part of Thane, Balkum was an area of factories and open plots that has been redeveloped into high-rise housing within the Thane Municipal Corporation.
The neighbourhood's appeal is its position. The Eastern Express Highway, Ghodbunder Road and the malls around Majiwada are a short drive away, and the Bhiwandi road gives access to the warehouse belt and the Mumbai-Nashik highway. Housing is mainly large gated complexes with 1, 2 and 3 BHK flats, plus some bigger 4 BHK units, bought by families moving within Thane and by buyers who work in Thane or commute by road to the eastern suburbs. Balkum Naka is congested, especially with trucks heading to and from Bhiwandi, and metro construction has added to the disruption. Metro Line 5 will have a Balkum Naka station on its first phase from Kapurbawdi to Bhiwandi, and Line 4 stops at Kapurbawdi nearby; both are under construction, with Line 4's first stretch in trial runs in September 2026.
