Badlapur, Thane

Badlapur is a town on the Ulhas river in Thane district, on the eastern edge of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Ambernath is its neighbour to the west along the railway, and the town sits about 40 km from Thane city. The Matheran range runs to the west of the Badlapur-Karjat railway line, and Barvi Dam, an important water source for towns in the district, lies in the hills beyond the town. Civic services are run by the Kulgaon-Badlapur Municipal Council.

Badlapur grew quickly as a place where salaried families could buy a first home for much less than in Thane or Kalyan. Its population was about 1.74 lakh in the 2011 census and has grown steadily since. Most homes are 1 and 2 BHK flats in mid-rise buildings, with newer gated complexes on both sides of the station. Badlapur station is on the Karjat branch of the Central line, so there is a direct suburban train to Kalyan, Thane and CSMT. The journey is long, though, and trains are packed at peak hours. Roads towards Ambernath and Kalyan are busy, and larger hospitals, colleges and malls are mostly in those towns.
