New Town, Kolkata

New Town is a planned township on the eastern side of the Kolkata metropolitan area, next to Salt Lake and Rajarhat. The state government began developing it in the late 1990s, with WBHIDCO building much of its infrastructure. Since November 2008 civic services such as water supply, sewerage, waste management, property tax and building permits have been handled by the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA). The township is organised into Action Areas I, II and III, with a central business district between the first two.

Biswa Bangla Sarani, the main arterial road, runs through New Town and links it to the airport in the north and, via Salt Lake and the EM Bypass, to south Kolkata. The Orange Line of the Kolkata Metro is being built through the township, with stations planned at locations including Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, Eco Park, City Centre-2 and Chinar Park; this section is not yet open.

New Town is one of the city's main office destinations. The Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub in Action Area II, opened in 2018, has land allotted to firms such as TCS, Cognizant and LTIMindtree, and a number of IT and banking companies operate across the township.

Public facilities include Eco Park (Prakriti Tirtha), opened in 2012, the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre (2017) and Tata Medical Center, a cancer hospital that began operating in 2011. Education options include Delhi Public School, The Newtown School and campuses of Amity University and St. Xavier's University.
