About Joka, Kolkata
Joka sits on the south-western edge of Kolkata, where the Kolkata Municipal Corporation area ends. It is made up of KMC wards 142, 143 and 144 and includes smaller pockets such as Diamond Park, Nabapally and 22 Bigha. Thakurpukur lies to its north and Pailan to its south. Policing is split between the Haridevpur and Thakurpukur police stations.
The locality is best known as the home of IIM Calcutta, the oldest of the Indian Institutes of Management, which moved to its Joka campus in 1975. Diamond Harbour Road (NH 12) is the main spine, with James Long Sarani offering a second route towards the city and Bakhrahat Road linking the villages of South 24 Parganas.
The biggest change for Joka in recent years has been the Purple Line of the Kolkata Metro. Joka is its southern terminal: the Joka to Taratala stretch was inaugurated in December 2022 and services were extended to Majerhat in March 2024. The underground section from Majerhat towards Esplanade and Eden Gardens is still being built, so for now commuters bound for central Kolkata need to change at Majerhat or continue by road. A short extension to an IIM-Joka station is planned.
Healthcare in the area includes the ESIC Medical College and Hospital on Diamond Harbour Road. Several large residential projects have come up along the Diamond Harbour Road corridor, making Joka one of the growing fringe markets of south-west Kolkata.
