Tollygunge, Kolkata

Tollygunge is a long-settled part of south Kolkata within the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. The area takes its name from Colonel William Tolly, who made the old Adi Ganga channel navigable in 1774, a waterway now known as Tolly's Nullah. After Partition in 1947, many refugee families settled here, and the locality grew into a dense residential neighbourhood.

Tollygunge is also closely tied to Bengali cinema. The local film industry is widely nicknamed Tollywood, and studios such as Indrapuri and Technicians' Studio are located here. Green spaces include the Tollygunge Club, founded in 1895 on about 100 acres with an 18-hole golf course, and the Royal Calcutta Golf Club a short way to the east.

The Blue Line of the Kolkata Metro has served the area since April 1986, when the line was extended to the station now called Mahanayak Uttam Kumar (formerly Tollygunge). Netaji and Rabindra Sarobar stations also serve the neighbourhood, and the line gives a direct ride to Park Street, Esplanade and north Kolkata. Tollygunge railway station on the Budge Budge suburban section adds a rail option. Mahanayak Uttam Kumar is also planned to become an interchange with the Purple Line in the future.

For healthcare, M.R. Bangur Hospital, a district-level super-speciality facility, is located in Tollygunge.
