About Rajarhat, Kolkata
Rajarhat lies on the north-eastern side of the Kolkata metropolitan area, in North 24 Parganas district. Since June 2015 the former Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipality has been part of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, where it accounts for wards 1 to 26. Localities such as Kestopur, Baguiati, Teghoria and Kaikhali fall within this belt, and policing is handled by the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate. The 2011 census counted just over four lakh residents.
The name is often used loosely alongside New Town, the planned township developed next to it by the state government from the late 1990s. Part of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport also falls within Rajarhat, and VIP Road and Biswa Bangla Sarani link the area to the airport, Salt Lake and the rest of the city.
For home buyers, the main draw is access to the IT and office clusters of New Town and Salt Lake Sector V. Public transport is set to improve with the Orange Line of the Kolkata Metro, which is planned to run through New Town, Chinar Park and VIP Road to the airport, although this northern section is still under construction. The Yellow Line already reaches the airport at Jai Hind station, opened in August 2025.
