Pallavaram, Chennai

Pallavaram is a suburb on GST Road in south-west Chennai, next to the airport at Meenambakkam. Chromepet lies to its south, Pammal and Anakaputhur to the west and Keelkattalai to the east, with the Pallavaram Cantonment, run by the Ministry of Defence, on its northern side. It was a municipality until November 2021, when it became part of the Tambaram City Municipal Corporation, and it is the headquarters of Pallavaram taluk in Chengalpattu district. Its history is long: stone tools from the Palaeolithic period have been found here, and the name is traced to a Pallava-era settlement.

Connectivity is the main strength. GST Road runs through the town, the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road leads east to OMR, and the Pallavaram-Kundrathur road goes west towards Poonamallee. Pallavaram station is on the suburban line between Chennai Beach and Tambaram, and the Chennai Airport metro station, the southern end of the Blue Line, is close by. Vels University (VISTAS) is based here, and the weekly Friday market is a local institution. The downsides are also tied to location: aircraft noise under the flight path, heavy traffic on GST Road, and a lake that has shrunk from about 189 acres because of dumping and encroachment.

Housing is mostly older independent houses and apartment blocks, with some newer gated projects towards the radial road and Pammal. Buyers include airport and aviation staff, government employees, and families who want a well-connected, established suburb at prices below the city.
