Velachery, Chennai

Velachery is a large residential area in south Chennai, in the Adyar zone of the Greater Chennai Corporation, bordered by Guindy, Taramani and Perungudi. It sits close to the IT offices of Taramani and Old Mahabalipuram Road and mixes older independent houses, apartment blocks and a busy commercial spine. Phoenix Marketcity opened on Velachery Main Road in January 2013, and The Grand Mall near the railway station the same year. Three main roads serve the area: Velachery Main Road, the Taramani Link Road and the Velachery Bypass Road, with twin flyovers at the busy Vijayanagar junction.

Rail links improved in 2026. The MRTS line, which reached Velachery in November 2007, was extended 4.5 km to St Thomas Mount from 14 March 2026, with stops at Puzhuthivakkam and Adambakkam, linking it with the suburban line and the metro at St Thomas Mount. The main drawback is flooding. Velachery floods in heavy north-east monsoon rains, as it did in 2015 and again during Cyclone Michaung in December 2023, and the nearby Pallikaranai marsh lost about three-quarters of its area between 1991 and 2015. Work was at the raft and footing stage in August 2026 and no completion date is published, so possession is some years away.
