Madhavaram, Chennai

Madhavaram is in north Chennai, north of Perambur, with Kodungaiyur to the south-east and Kolathur and Puzhal towards the west and north-west. It is a zone of the Greater Chennai Corporation (Zone III) and also a taluk, which moved from Tiruvallur district to Chennai district in August 2018. The 2011 census counted about 1.19 lakh people.

The area is known for its public institutions. The Madhavaram Milk Colony, the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University campus, a Tamil Nadu Fisheries University campus and a botanical garden with around 400 plant species take up large, green tracts. The Madhavaram Mofussil Bus Terminus handles buses to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and the CMDA truck terminal, running since 1992 on about 100 acres, serves freight traffic. Madhavaram Milk Colony will be the northern terminus of two Chennai Metro Phase 2 lines, the Purple Line to Siruseri and the Red Line to Sholinganallur, with a depot at Madhavaram; the Madhavaram stretches are under construction and among the last sections due. Until then, city buses and the Inner Ring Road are the main links. The trucks and buses bring heavy traffic, and the Kodungaiyur dump yard, one of Chennai's two major landfills, is not far to the south-east.

Housing is mainly independent houses and small apartment blocks in older colonies, with newer gated projects on the larger plots towards the ring road. Prices are lower than in central and south Chennai, and buyers are mostly families from north Chennai and people working in the Ambattur and Manali industrial areas.
