About Alipore, Kolkata
Alipore is an old, established neighbourhood of south Kolkata, bounded by Tolly's Nullah to the north, Bhowanipore to the east and Diamond Harbour Road to the west, with New Alipore to its south. It falls under KMC wards 74 and 82, and its police station is on Belvedere Road.
Much of the area is taken up by institutions. The National Library of India has been housed on the Belvedere Estate since 1953, the Alipore Zoological Garden on Alipore Road opened to the public in 1876, and the South 24 Parganas district court sits here. The Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) is also located in Alipore.
Neighbouring New Alipore, south across the Budge Budge railway line, was planned as a residential suburb in the 1950s. It is bounded by B.L. Saha Road on the east and Diamond Harbour Road on the west, and James Long Sarani runs along the old Kalighat–Falta railway route. Several newer projects marketed under the Alipore name are in fact located in New Alipore, so buyers should check the exact address.
For transport, Jatin Das Park and Kalighat on the Blue Line are the closest metro stations to Alipore. On the New Alipore side, Majerhat station on the Purple Line has operated since March 2024 and connects to the Majerhat suburban railway station. Majerhat and Kidderpore also serve the Circular and Budge Budge suburban lines.
